Top London Attraction 7: Saint Paul's Church

Many people think of St. Paul's Cathedral in London as an image of Wren's classical church, however there was a church dedicated to St. Paul long while before Mr. Wren put his mark on the skyline of London.

The first church on this spot was built in 604 AD, only 8 years after the first Christian mission under St. Augustine. The wooden church was commissioned by King Ethelbert of Kent housing the first bishop of the East Saxons.

That first church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 675-85. The Vikings destroyed the second St. Paul's Cathedral in AD 962 on one of their periodic invasions.
